June 2019. Sherwin meets the mother of Skylha. By April 2021 he is working full-time as a security guard at a shopping centre in Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast — showing up, doing the work, building a life. When COVID borders finally open in December 2021, he flies to Adelaide. His stepdad has passed away. He stays with his mum to grieve. Skylha and her mum come too.

Bored. No work. No plan. Just grief and time. So he does what builders do — he finds something broken and asks what it could become.

He buys 9 wrecked Ford Cortinas — classic cars, written off, total capital invested: $6,000. He transforms one into a show car. The transformation was a beauty. His mum and two aunties watch him from the windows, pulling parts in the driveway. He recruits all three — orders, production, running the operation out of a suburban house in Adelaide.

He buys a wreck caravan from the country for $500 — $700 including delivery. When he opens the door, he finds something unexpected.

The interior had been set up as an enclosure space. Built-in furniture. A complete living setup — a home inside something the world had thrown away. Hidden inside what everyone else saw as scrap.

His mum and two sisters are involved in a car accident. They survive, but need six months of counselling and physiotherapy. He keeps building. Everything around him is being transformed or renovated.

January 2023: Skylha and her mum fly to the Gold Coast to visit family. One month later — the call: "We're not coming back. She has another partner."

Devastation. Separated from his daughter. Then April 26, 2023 — a protection order is filed against him. Falsely accused as the abuser. Not allowed near Skylha or her mother.

The darkest time. But he kept building. Not because it was easy. Not because anything made sense. Because the builder builds. That is what he does. Everything around him — broken things, wrecked things, forgotten things — gets transformed. He could not stop, even when the most important thing in his life had been taken.

He meets Ruby. She lived two houses down from his mum. Three months of happiness — light in the middle of the darkest year of his life.

End of September 2023. The call that changed everything. Skylha's maternal grandmother calls from the hospital.

A 2,400 kilometre drive. His mother and Ruby beside him. Excited. Terrified. He has not seen his daughter in ten months.

But the outstanding protection order limits access. Child Safety takes control due to the neglect — and the false DVO that was filed against him complicates everything. The man who is trying to save his daughter is still legally restricted from being near her.

Nearly three months fighting Child Safety and the Federal Court. Every week a new hearing, a new document, a new system standing between a father and his daughter.

End of December 2023: Skylha is granted to him full-time.

His lawyer sends 168 pages of reports. The details break him to pieces.

He carries this. He does not set it down. But he does not let it stop him either. The weight of those 168 pages becomes the foundation of what he builds next.

No permanent home. Hotels. Cars. A caravan. Skylha has just recovered from trauma and physical injuries. He needs to give her stability — but he has none to give.

So he does the only thing he knows. He transforms a van into a motorhome. Four months on the road with his daughter — her recovery, his care, the Gold Coast, the highway, wherever they could land.

Emergency accommodation finally found. And he goes back to what he knows — caravans. $500 capital. Again. The cycle restarts, but now with something it never had before: a reason that won't let him quit.

At some point in the darkest stretch — the motorhome, the road, the courts, the 168 pages — he made a promise. Not to an investor. Not to a government agency. Not to a board. To God.
